I recently shared design trends for 2025 and on this post, I’m sharing what home decor we should leave behind because it may be making your space look cheap. I’m also explaining what you can do instead to elevate your home’s style. If you’ve ever looked around your home and felt like something was off, this blog post may be beneficial for you. Here is a list of decor that makes interiors look cheap.

01. Faux Plants

I’m a believer in the benefits of having greenery in a home, but faux plants can often look unrealistic and out of place, especially when the leaves are unnaturally glossy. They tend to scream “fake,” which brings down the overall sophistication of your space.

Instead, try plants that have a fuller look so you can fluff them to make them look more convincing like an olive tree. If you’re up for it, real plants always take things to the next level. Consider low-maintenance options like ZZ plants or succulents.

02. Trellis Area Rugs

Trellis area rugs were popular in the past, but they often cheapen the look of a room. This is largely due to their overwhelming pattern which can take away from other design elements in the space. Additionally, they’re often available in bright colors that also minimize the high quality look of any space.

Instead, opt for rugs with subtle patterns and natural fibers like jute, or wool. These add texture and character without competing with the rest of your decor. This will also contribute to the sophistication in the room.

03. Grommet Curtains

While they’re functional and easy to hang, the large metal rings on grommet curtains can look cheap, especially in more elegant spaces.

Instead, try curtains with pleats or rod pockets for a more polished look. They’re easy to find as they’re available anywhere curtains are sold. And don’t forget to hang them high and wide to make your windows feel larger and make the room feel more luxurious.

04. Accent Walls Using Just Paint

Accent walls painted in just one solid color used to be a go-to design trick but, just adding paint to one wall can feel flat which doesn’t enhance the space at all. It doesn’t add the depth or texture needed to make a statement and sometimes it can make a room feel incomplete.

Instead, elevate your accent wall by adding elements like wallpaper, paneling, or even a gallery of framed art. These details add dimension and keep the space from feeling like it’s partially done.

05. Wall Quotes

We’ve all seen them—the “Live Laugh Love” decals or similar phrases. While the sentiment might be sweet, these quotes can feel a bit overdone and lack the originality that makes a home feel personal and curated.

Instead, consider swapping wall quotes for framed photographs that have personal meaning to you. A gallery wall with a mix of art and family photos can make a bigger impact without feeling cliché.

06. Black Torchiere Floor Lamps

The basic black torchiere floor lamps are affordable and functional, but they’re also outdated and don’t contribute much to the overall style of a room.

Look for floor lamps with interesting shapes, materials, or shades. Arched floor lamps or those with natural materials like wood or brass finishes can instantly elevate your space.

07. Wall Art Divided into Multiple Pieces

Lastly, let’s talk about wall art that’s divided into multiple pictures, like a triptych of a single image. While these can seem like an easy way to fill a wall, they often lack the sophistication of a single, impactful piece.

Instead, opt for a large, single piece of art that draws the eye and anchors the room. If you’re working with a smaller budget, you can also create a cohesive gallery wall with pieces from estate sales and Facebook marketplace or look for affordable options on a website like Etsy.
