December 29, 2021 marks 5 years since we moved into our first home and brought it to the 21st Century. Looking back, I’ve learned quite a lot of lessons that I’d be remiss if I didn’t share. Keep reading to see 7 tips you need to know before starting a DIY home project from a self-proclaimed DIY professional.
1. Know how much it will cost
Do your thorough research before you take on the project and know the estimated cost of everything from tools to materials and set up.
2. Know how much time it will take
Some projects can be completed in a day but most take several days. Figure out how much time it will realistically take you from start to finish. Account for set up, unexpected mistakes, drying time, additional trips to the hardware store and clean up.
3. Peruse YouTube before you peruse Home Depot
A good place to do tips 1 and 2 is YouTube. You’ll find step by step instructions but you’ll also see tips and tricks that may help you accomplish the project a little easier and could save you some time.
4. Buy extra
When you’re at the hardware store, don’t hesitate to buy extra supplies. This will prevent you from making additional trips to the hardware store. It’s always easier to return extras you didn’t use than it is to run back and forth buying more, especially when you’re in the middle of a project.

5. Get the right protection
Buy everything you need to protect yourself like masks, knee pads, etc. And don’t forget to buy protection for the space where you’re working like drop cloth, plastic coverings, etc.
6. Start early in the morning
My husband once started a DIY project at 3pm and didn’t wrap up until close to midnight. Don’t be like my husband. Start early in the morning so you have good lighting, a full day to correct errors and plenty of time to run additional errands for the project if needed.
7. Document the process
Don’t forget to take before and after pictures! And if you’re feeling really fancy, capture some videos too.
