Over the last few years, our team has noticed a few design mistakes in the homes of new clients that are common for many homeowners. Check out 5 most common design mistakes homeowners make and advice to help you fix them.

Hanging art too high

Wall art should be seen and appreciated and the best way to do that is by hanging it at eye level. A general rule to follow is to hang the center of the wall art 57 inches off the floor. This guidance works best when your ceilings are 7 to 9 feet high which is the average ceiling height in a home.

Buying matching furniture sets

Designed spaces should be curated, meaning, a designed space should include a collection of pieces that vary by color, texture and shape. Furniture sets make a room look flat, lacking visual interest and personality. Consider sourcing individual pieces that compliment each other such as a dining table from one store and dining chairs from another.

Using the wrong area rug size

An area rug should decorate and ground a space but it can’t do its job if it is the wrong size. For a living room, there are 1 of 2 rules you can follow. Rule 1: All conversational furniture fits on the rug or Rule 2: The front legs of all conversational furniture fits on the rug. Follow one of these rules in your living room and you can’t go wrong.

Lighting a room incorrectly

Different light temperatures work best in different rooms. The four most common for a home are soft white, warm white, bright white and daylight. Soft and warm white are warmer and work best in spaces where you relax while bright white and daylight are cooler and work well in bathrooms and kitchens.

Mixing too many design styles

It is safe to mix design styles in a room but if you’re not a designer or you don’t want to engage one, stick to one design style. Use Pinterest to help you find the aesthetic you like the most. Once you identify your preferred look, find a furniture store that specializes in that design style and source large furniture pieces from that store.
